“We’ve voted today for equality, for love, it’s time for more marriages, more commitment, more love, more respect,” Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said. “This is Australia: fair, diverse, loving and filled with respect.”

The historic law was passed today in Australian Parliament, with only 2 votes against it. Attorney-General George Brandis advised the law would formally change on Saturday, allowing same-sex couples to lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage from this weekend.
After the vote, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said, "This isn't about me or the other 150 members of Parliament - it is about Australians and Australia, the LGBTIQ people and their families and their partners. We are telling them: we love you, you're equal."

A rainbow flag was displayed in Parliament as MPs cheered and hugged in celebration.
