The first ever Pride March took place in New York City in June 1970, one year after the Stonewall Riots. The Marches were organised to highlight the struggle that gay men and lesbians faced everyday and also to fight for their fundamental rights - to be allowed to love who they choose and to do so openly.
The following year, Pride Marches took place in London, Paris and
Germany and now take place annually all over the world.
Many Marches have now become celebrations of our culture and festivals are held that can last for weeks.
Do we still need a Pride March?
There are still many countries who oppress, abuse and even kill people just because of their sexuality. Even in countries, where there are equal rights and Marriage Equality, lesbians are still being raped and murdered. So yes, let's keep marching and celebrating our wonderful culture and diversity.
