Durkan a former U.S. attorney, was projected to win the city's mayoral race over her opponent, Cary Moon. As well as being the first lesbian, she is also the first woman to the post since 1926.

In her victory speech last night she said “It wasn’t about me, or anyone else, it was about you, it was about Seattle and the future of Seattle...It’s a campaign about what Seattle will be like for that next generation, and you have committed to making it the best Seattle ever.”

She also took the opportunity to warn Donald Trump, "Keep your hands off Seattle."
