Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, is confident that a bill legalising Same-Sex Marriage will be passed before Christmas.
With a high response rate already, with 70% of Australians already sending their 'marriage equality' ballot papers back, there is every indication that there will be a "YES" result. (Polls conducted this week are showing at least 59 per cent of those who have returned their postal ballots are in favour of same-sex marriage against just 38 per cent saying they are against.)
Speaking to news.com, Prime Minister John Turnbull said, “If there is a Yes vote, then we will ensure there is a private members bill to legalise same-sex marriage and I have no doubt the parliament will deal with that before we all break up in December.”
Turnbull went on to say, "if the majority of those Australians who vote, vote Yes, then we’ll ensure there’s a private members bill." ... “Members of the government will be free to vote as they wish ... and it will sail through the parliament, believe me.”
The Australian Labour Party have also announced this week that they would support the bill, should the Marriage Equality Postal Survey result in a 'Yes' verdict.
The survey closes on the 7th November with the results being announced on 15th November.
If successful, Australia will become the 27th country to allow same-sex marriage.
