First LGBT weddings to take place in Germany this Sunday.

Germany is set to join other European Countries by allowing same-sex marriages from Sunday.

Civil Partnerships have been legal in Germany since 2001 and by 2017, polls indicated that 75% of Germans were in favour of same sex marriage. The marriage bill was passed in June of this year, when Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has always been against gay marriage, finally allowed her Conservative MPs to follow their conscience on the gay marriage vote. Merkel, who many blame for the delays in passing the new law, voted no to gay marriages.

The law now states that “marriage binds two people of different sexes or the same sex for life”.

This is great news for the LGBT community, especially as Germany is seen as one of the most gay friendly countries in the world, with most of the country agreeing that homosexuality should be accepted by society.

With an estimated 95,000 LGBT couples, Sunday could be a wedding packed day!
