The movie, set in a simulated reality, where elderly people are allowed to recapture their youth for up to 5 hours a week, centres around Yorkie and Kelly (played by MacKenzie Davis and Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who meet every week in 1987 and soon fall in love.

Back in reality, Yorkie, who has been in a coma for 40 years, wishes to be euthanised, so her soul can be uploaded to San Junipero permanently. Kelly is not sure what to do, as she is torn between Heaven and being with Yorkie.
