Megan Rapinoe - USA

The 32 year old midfielder/winger helped the US win silver at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, Gold at the 2012 London Olympics and Gold at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.

She was the first ever player to score a 'Goal Olimpico' at the Olympic Games.

She plays for the club Seattle Reign FC

The talented star dated Australian football player Sarah Walsh for 5 years up until 2013.

She became engaged to singer Sera Cahoone in 2015 but the engagement was called off in January 2017.

In July, 2017, Rapinoe confirmed that she has been dating football player Sue Bird since Autumn 2016.

 

Rapinoe came out as a lesbian in an interview with Out Magazine in 2012. In the interview, she revealed that she was in a relationship with an Australian athlete.

She is an Ambassador for Athlete Ally, which fights against homophobia and transphobia in sports and, in 2015, she was inducted into the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame.

“There is no reason why I’m not out,” Rapinoe said in 2016, “This is important. This is important to me, but it’s important on such a bigger level.”

Casey Stoney - England

Defender Stoney has been capped more than 100 times for the England's women's national football team.  

She became captain of the England Team in 2012 and captain of the Team GB Squad for the 2012 London Olympics.

Stoney became the first female member of the Professional Footballers' Association's managment committee.

The 35 year old came out publicly in BBC Sport interview in February 2014. She said at the time.

 

 "I feel it's really important for me to speak out as a gay player because there are so many people struggling who are gay, and you hear about people taking their own lives because they are homosexual. That should never happen."

In 2015 the University of Essex awarded Stoney an Honorary degree.

In July 2014, Stoner announced that her partner, fellow footballer, Megan Harris was pregnant with their twins.

They went through 3 rounds of IVF, using an anonymous donor, before they were successful

Harris and Stoney went through several rounds of IVF before they were successful and Harris became pregnant.

Abby Wambach - USA

Forward Wambach is the all time highest goal scorer for the USA, scoring 184 goals for the National Team.

She was in the squad that won gold medals in the 2004 and 2012 Olympic Games. 

In 2012, she was awarded the FIFA World Player of the Year (the first US woman to win in 10 years).

Wambach and Huffman divorced in 2016,

In November of the same year, she announced that she is in a relationship with author Glennon Doyle Melton and they married in May 2017.

In 2013, Wambach married her long term girlfriend, Sarah Huffman. 

 

She did not officially 'come out' as she felt she had never been closeted, saying,

"I can't speak for other people, but for me, I feel like gone are the days that you need to come out of a closet. I never felt like I was in a closet. I never did. I always felt comfortable with who I am and the decision I made". 

Stephanie Labbe - Canada

30 year old  Labbe won a bronze Medal at the 2016 Olympic Games as Goalkeeper for Canada.

Labbe played for the Swedish Football League for many years before returning to the US in 2016 to play for Washington Spirit.

Labbe is dating football defender Marie Eve Nault.
